The Abandoned Silos:
A Former Sewage Treatment Plant

Since 1982, the largest part of Zeeburgereiland has been occupied by the Oost sewage treatment plant. This photo captures an open day at the plant, and some curious visitors are strolling around the buildings.

Amsterdam's sewage water was trown untreated into the Buiten-IJ and the purification was left to nature, to the IJmeer. The sewage treatment took place in these three imposing tanks, which have remained abandoned in this location after the use of the sewage plant, which stopped in 2006.
